China-Nepal Border Floods: 558 Missing After Mudslide

A devastating mudslide on the China-Nepal border has claimed three lives, with 558 people still missing as of August 27. State media reports indicate that a significant portion of the missing, 260 individuals, are foreign nationals.

More than a thousand rescuers, utilizing dogs and drones, are engaged in a desperate search for survivors. The mudslide occurred on the morning of August 26, when a massive wall of mud and debris swept over buildings on the Chinese side of the border. Surveillance footage captured the terrifying moments as dozens of people fled the advancing surge.

Rescue operations are hampered by several critical challenges. Li Qipu of China's paramilitary People's Armed Police highlighted the instability of a reservoir lake upstream and the narrow mountain roads as major obstacles. While surrounding roads remain open for supplies, large vehicles and heavy equipment cannot yet reach the primary disaster zone.

Authorities have mobilized nearly 800 personnel and over 150 vehicles to the border area. The fire service has deployed 431 personnel, equipped with search dogs, life-detection scanners, and small boats. Relief supplies have begun arriving in Tibet via civilian and military aircraft. However, the region faces a continued high risk of secondary disasters, such as landslides and rockfalls, due to overnight rainfall.
