China Starts Production of Home-Grown Immersion DUV Chipmaking Tools: Source

China has initiated mass production of its own immersion deep-ultraviolet (DUV) lithography machines, a pivotal technology for manufacturing advanced semiconductors. This move signifies a crucial advancement in Beijing's strategic push for technological self-sufficiency and a reduction in dependence on foreign suppliers.

The production effort is reportedly led by Shanghai Aishengna Electronic Technology Group, a state-owned entity that has integrated teams from prominent Chinese lithography startups. This achievement aligns with President Xi Jinping's national semiconductor initiative, a top priority for the Chinese government.

While this development is a notable success for China's ambition to build a domestic semiconductor industry, it does not pose an immediate commercial challenge to ASML, the Dutch company that currently holds a dominant position in the DUV lithography market. The Chinese-made machines require further testing and are not yet comparable to ASML's advanced models.

However, the successful deployment of these domestically produced DUV machines could provide Chinese chipmakers with a vital alternative source of equipment. This becomes particularly relevant should Western nations impose further restrictions on the export or servicing of foreign lithography tools. Leading Chinese chip manufacturers, including SMIC, Hua Hong Semiconductor, and ChangXin Memory Technologies, are expected to receive these machines later this year.
