Chinese academic integrity advocate accuses Beihang University professor of data fabrication

A well-known figure in China's academic integrity circles, 'Geng Tongxue,' has once again leveled accusations of research misconduct, this time targeting Chang Lingqian, the vice dean of the School of Medical Science and Engineering at Beihang University.

In a video released on June 16, 'Geng Tongxue' questioned the validity of data presented in a paper by Chang, slated for publication in 'Nature' in April 2025. The advocate described the experimental data as "suspiciously perfect," suggesting it was artificially generated. According to 'Geng Tongxue,' genuine experimental data typically includes random errors and fluctuations, but the paper's second and third experimental curves could be precisely derived from the first dataset using a fixed formula.

Following the video's release, a large number of netizens attempted to access the official websites of Beihang University and the involved school to view the accused scholar's resume and research disclosures. The university's website experienced temporary outages and performance issues, gradually recovering by late that evening.

Chang Lingqian is publicly recognized as a distinguished young scholar in China, a leading talent in the "Ten Thousand Talents Plan," and a recipient of the State Council's special allowance. His research interests include cell biochips and nano-electroporation.

'Geng Tongxue' has also recently accused Wang Jun, a professor in the School of Aeronautical Science and Engineering at the same university, of publishing papers with contradictory data in the "Journal of Mechanical Engineering" and "Acta Aeronautica Sinica." 'Geng Tongxue,' whose real name is Geng Jiantao, was a doctoral student at Beihang University's School of Biomedical Engineering before dropping out in 2025 to become a social media influencer. Since April, he has gained attention for reporting alleged academic fraud by figures including Wang Ping, dean of the School of Life Science and Technology at Tongji University.
