Chinese and Peruvian Archaeologists to Jointly Study Caral Civilization

A new era of cultural and scientific exchange is dawning between China and Peru, as archaeologists from both nations commit to a joint research project focused on the ancient Caral civilization. The initiative, formalized through an agreement between the Institute of Archaeology of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and Peruvian institutions, signifies a deepening of bilateral ties.

This collaboration marks a significant milestone, representing China's first formal engagement in joint field archaeology activities within South America. The agreement was signed with the Caral archaeological zone, under Peru's Ministry of Culture, and the Faculty of Archaeology at the National University of San Marcos. Local press highlighted the importance of this unprecedented cooperation.

The project's scope is comprehensive, encompassing field work, advanced scientific archaeological research, the conservation of cultural heritage, and the joint training of specialists. Initially, the focus will be on the remnants of the Caral civilization, recognized as one of the oldest in the Americas. Future phases may expand to include the study of Inca civilization vestiges, offering a broader understanding of the region's rich history.

Initial field activities will concentrate on exploration within the Chancay and Supe river basins, areas known to host key sites associated with the Caral culture, including the Sacred City of Caral and Áspero. This archaeological endeavor complements the robust economic and diplomatic relationship between China and Peru, which has been elevated to a comprehensive strategic partnership since 2013.
