Chinese brand BAIC launches hybrid SUV in Argentina with 920 km range

BAIC, a Chinese automotive brand, is expanding its presence in Argentina with the introduction of the X55 II Hybrid, an electrified variant of its C-segment compact SUV. Imported from China and distributed by Grupo Belcastro, the new model enters the market with a pre-sale price of US$36,900, with initial deliveries expected in August.

The standout feature of the X55 II Hybrid is its innovative range-extender hybrid electric vehicle (REHEV) system. Unlike conventional hybrids, its 1.5-liter gasoline engine functions solely as a generator to recharge the battery, while an electric motor provides propulsion. This setup delivers a combined maximum power of 217 horsepower and 310 Nm of torque, with the manufacturer claiming an impressive autonomy of around 920 kilometers on a full charge.

Beyond its powertrain, the X55 II Hybrid retains the distinctive design of its conventional counterpart, featuring sharp lines, slim headlights, retractable door handles, and an aerodynamic profile. The vehicle is equipped with an advanced suite of driver-assistance systems (ADAS), including a 540-degree panoramic view and autonomous parking capabilities. The interior has also been updated with a larger 12.3-inch multimedia screen and a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, alongside smartphone integration and an eight-speaker audio system.

The introduction of the X55 II Hybrid comes at a time when numerous brands are introducing similar vehicles in Argentina, capitalizing on favorable tax regulations for electrified vehicles. BAIC's new offering aims to capture a share of this growing market segment.
