Chinese J-20 jets spotted near India, raising deployment questions

Chinese J-20 stealth fighter jets have been observed in significant numbers at two airbases positioned towards the Indian border, indicating Beijing's capability to deploy its fifth-generation air power to the Himalayan sector. While commercial satellite imagery from July 9, 2026, revealed eight J-20s at Hotan Air Base in Xinjiang, approximately 245 kilometers from India's Daulat Beg Oldie forward base, another set of images from June 25 showed four J-20s at Damxung Air Base in Tibet.

These findings, reported by India Today and Military Watch Magazine, suggest at least 12 J-20s were captured by satellites at these two bases facing India within a roughly two-week period. The J-20s at Hotan are believed to be from an early production batch, potentially transferred to the 99th Air Brigade, which previously operated J-16 multirole fighter jets under China's Western Theater Command.

However, definitive conclusions about permanent stationing require caution. Neither the Chinese government nor its military has officially announced a change in the 99th Air Brigade's primary aircraft. Satellite imagery alone cannot confirm unit ownership, engine configurations, combat readiness, or whether the aircraft are merely present for temporary training or rotation.

This is not the first time J-20s have appeared at Hotan. Previous satellite imagery from October 30, 2025, showed 12 J-20s alongside other aircraft, including J-16s, H-6 bombers, Y-20 transport/tanker planes, and KJ-500 early warning aircraft. Analysis suggests such large deployments may have been part of annual "Red Sword" exercises, designed to test large-scale air combat scenarios with a mix of fourth-generation fighters, stealth aircraft, tankers, and early warning platforms.

The recent findings present at least three possibilities: the J-20s could be part of a training detachment, a routine operational rotation, or the initial phase of the 99th Air Brigade's transition from J-16s to J-20s. Confirmation of permanent deployment would necessitate further evidence, such as long-term recurrent appearances, serial numbers linking aircraft to specific units, changes in maintenance facilities, and a reduction in the J-16 fleet.
