Chinese Mathematician Hong Wang Wins Fields Medal, Third Woman in History to Receive Honor

Hong Wang, a Chinese mathematician based at New York University, has been awarded the prestigious Fields Medal for 2026. This marks a historic achievement as she becomes only the third woman ever to receive this highest distinction in mathematics. Her groundbreaking work in harmonic analysis and geometric measure theory earned her the recognition.

The Fields Medal, established by Canadian mathematician John Charles Fields, is awarded every four years to a maximum of four researchers under the age of 40. It comes with a gold medal and a prize of 15,000 Canadian dollars. The award was created as an alternative to the Nobel Prize, which does not include a category for mathematics. The International Mathematical Union grants the award.

At 35 years old, Wang was recognized alongside another Chinese mathematician, 37-year-old Yu Deng. This is the first time two mathematicians of Asian descent have received the award simultaneously. The other recipients were Americans Jacob Tsimerman, 38, and John Pardon, 37. The organization specifically highlighted Wang's significant "advances" in her field.
