Chinese national arrested in South Korea for alleged murder of exchange student

A Chinese national studying in South Korea has been arrested on suspicion of murdering a fellow student. The 30-year-old suspect was apprehended on August 25 after the victim, a 20-year-old female exchange student, was found dead in his residence in Gyeongsan. Police confirmed the suspect had filed the missing person report for the victim himself.

The victim, a graduate student at a university in Gyeongsan, had arrived in South Korea on August 14 to receive her diploma. She was last heard from on August 20 and was reported missing by her family on August 21.

The suspect claimed to be in a romantic relationship with the victim, despite not actually being in one.

During police questioning, the suspect allegedly claimed to be in a romantic relationship with the victim, despite not actually being in one. The case gained traction on Chinese social media after a post, purportedly from the victim's sister, shared her photo and a plea for help, including an image with former South Korean President Moon Jae-in. The victim had apparently visited Moon's bookstore.
