Chinese national found alive after 10 days buried in tunnel following devastating Nepal floods

A Chinese hydropower worker survived for 10 days inside a tunnel in Nepal before rescuers brought him out alive, local officials said. A woman was also rescued alive after the devastating floods that struck the country.

The Nepalese prime minister’s office said the man was found in a hydropower tunnel. His rescue raised the number of workers recovered alive from the Trishuli hydropower project to three. Two Nepalese workers had been rescued the previous day from the Trishuli 3A project.

Nepal’s Army said a joint team of Nepalese military personnel and South Korean disaster experts evacuated the man from a 225-meter tunnel, about 738 feet long. He was undergoing medical checks after the rescue. Images showed the evacuation taking place by helicopter, with a military medic examining him during the flight.

A photograph released by China’s state broadcaster CCTV showed two rescuers carrying the man out of the tunnel. Authorities said about 900 workers were missing from 12 hydropower projects across Nepal, with an estimated 500 trapped in tunnels.

At least 1,300 people died in the floods on Aug. 26, which may have been caused by a glacier collapse, authorities said. More than 5,000 people remained missing.
