This week in Egypt
Egyptian media this week extensively covered the spreading Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo, alongside regional diplomatic efforts as Egyptian and Tunisian foreign ministers met to discuss regional escalation. Domestically, headlines focused on the US pausing visa processing for Egyptians, cyber scams targeting the Grand Egyptian Museum, and the Agriculture Ministry attributing a tomato price surge to high temperatures. State-aligned media also highlighted the Fayoum Governor's inspection of 'Hayah Karima' initiative projects.
About Egypt
Egypt is a transcontinental nation renowned for its ancient civilization, iconic monuments like the Pyramids of Giza, and its strategic role connecting Africa and Asia via the Suez Canal. Its rich cultural heritage and significant regional influence are often reflected in its news, though coverage is shaped by extensive government control over media and widespread self-censorship.
Visiting Egypt
Media landscape
The media environment in Egypt is tightly controlled by the government, leading to the imprisonment of many journalists and heavy self-censorship among private outlets. This significantly limits independent reporting and diverse perspectives.
When consuming news from Egypt, be aware of government influence and self-censorship; seek out independent voices like Mada Masr for alternative perspectives.

Gradual decrease in temperatures across Egypt on Wednesday, with active winds and potential sandstorms predicted for several areas, disrupting maritime traffic in the Red Sea and Mediterranean coasts. | Egypt Independent (EG) | Wednesday, May 22, 2024, 10:00 AM GMT+3 | The Egyptian Meteorological Authority (EMA) forecasts a gradual decrease in temperatures across northern Egypt, extending to Greater Cairo and northern Upper Egypt, on Wednesday. This decrease will be accompanied by wind activity that will help to moderate the weather for some areas. The EMA explained that the weather will be mild at night and during the early morning hours across most regions, while hot weather will prevail during the day in most areas, becoming very hot in southern Upper Egypt. Greater Cairo and the Nile Delta will reach temperatures of 31C, while the northern coast will reach 23C. Temperatures in southern Upper Egypt will soar to 46C. Windy, rainy weather for Wednesday Wednesday’s weather maps warn of active winds with speeds ranging between 30-40 km/h in several areas, with the possibility of sandstorms and dust storms in South Sinai, the northwestern coast, and the Red Sea Governorate. This may lead to reduced horizontal visibility in some areas of the Western Desert and Upper Egypt, with gusts of wind reaching speeds of 50-60 km/h at intervals. The forecast also predicts a chance of light rain in areas along the northern coast and northern Lower Egypt. The forecast further indicates a slight chance of low cloud formation over scattered areas of the northeastern coast, southern Lower Egypt, Greater Cairo, and the Suez Canal cities, which may be accompanied by light, insignificant drizzle in some areas. The EMA noted that there would be disruptions to maritime traffic in parts of the Mediterranean Sea, the Red Sea, the Gulf of Suez, and the Gulf of Aqaba, with wind speeds ranging between 40-50 km/h and waves reaching heights of two to three meters. The authority urged citizens to take necessary precautions, especially drivers and those with allergies and sinus problems, and to stay updated on the latest weather forecasts. Edited translation from Al-Masry Al-Youm | Src: Egypt Independent (EG)
