Choo Mi-ae Aims to Strengthen Local Government Voice as Candidate for Municipalities Association President

Gyeonggi Province Governor Choo Mi-ae has officially declared her candidacy for the presidency of the Association of the Municipalities of Korea. She stated her intention to amplify the voices of local governments within the State Council meetings, should she be elected. This move positions her to directly propose policies aimed at expanding local autonomy and strengthening the authority of regional governments.

The election for the association's president is scheduled for June 28 during the 61st regular general assembly. The position is filled by a vote among the attending provincial governors, with a one-year term. Currently, the association comprises 16 metropolitan local governments, with 12 led by members of the Democratic Party and four by the People Power Party. Approximately nine governors are expected to attend the assembly.

Choo's campaign emphasizes the need for strong leadership to enhance the status of Gyeonggi Province and bolster the role of local governments nationwide. Her team highlighted that a prominent leader is necessary to effectively expand local government authority and foster cooperation with the central government. The association serves as a platform for metropolitan local government heads to discuss regional issues and advocate for their constituents.
