CHP lawmaker warns of party's disintegration beyond division

CHP Istanbul lawmaker Oğuz Kaan Salıcı declared that the Republican People's Party (CHP) is facing disintegration, a situation he described as more severe than simple division. He expressed concern that the party is like a pomegranate whose rind has cracked, with signs of fragmentation appearing even before the recent leadership change.

Salıcı pointed to a series of local officials defecting from the CHP to the ruling AK Party as evidence of this decline. He listed mayors from various districts and cities, including Keçiören, Şehitkamil, Keşan, Aksu, Serik, Haymana, Söke, Seydişehir, Altınova, Hasankeyf, Göle, Afyon, and Aydın, who have switched parties. He questioned the motivations behind these moves, suggesting they cannot be solely explained by a desire for positions or fear of imprisonment, especially when defecting to a party perceived as oppressive.

He further highlighted defections from within the party's leadership, noting that Burcu Köksal, a former CHP Group Deputy Chair, and Özlem Çerçioğlu, the Chair of the 37th Party Congress, also joined the AKP. Salıcı argued that the issue is not about who brought these individuals into the party but rather the underlying reasons for their departure. He also mentioned the resignation of İzmir Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Cemil Tugay and other local figures, suggesting that the party's internal issues extend beyond political rivalries.

Salıcı attributed the party's fragmentation to a weakening of central authority and a diminished sense of party loyalty, exacerbated by an inadequately defined pursuit of "change." He believes this has led to individual ambitions overshadowing party cohesion, a problem he feels is amplified by social media influence and a lack of substantive ideological grounding. He concluded that attributing the party's troubles solely to the recent annulment decision is an oversimplification that masks the deeper issues of disintegration.
