Christian Democrats celebrate 69 years, focus on modernization

The Christian Democratic Party (DC) marked its 69th anniversary with a celebration attended by militants, historical leaders, authorities, and representatives from various opposition parties. Founded on July 28, 1957, the party reaffirmed its dedication to democracy, dialogue, social justice, and seeking agreements to address the nation's challenges.

The commemorative event featured an ecumenical service, tributes to emblematic figures, and the definition of the party's institutional goals for the future. A special tribute was paid to former senator and foreign minister Gabriel Valdés, marking 15 years since his passing, highlighting his significant contributions to public service and Chile's democratic recovery. The party also presented awards to distinguished members in the social, economic, political, journalistic, and human rights fields.

Álvaro Ortiz, the national president of the DC and a deputy, emphasized the party's decisive role in Chile's political development. He noted the party's historical contributions through presidents like Eduardo Frei Montalva, Patricio Aylwin, and Eduardo Frei Ruiz-Tagle, as well as its participation in successful coalitions. Ortiz expressed satisfaction with the high turnout, which included allied parties, indicating a shared path forward.

Looking ahead, Ortiz presented the strategic guidelines set by the National Board for the 2026-2028 period. These aim for a significant organic and doctrinal modernization of the party. The plan includes four key areas: strengthening ideological identity, enhancing electoral work, refining political strategy, and growing membership. A reform of the party's statutes is also planned to ensure the DC modernizes, speaks to future generations, and is equipped to face Chile's upcoming challenges.
