Christopher Nolan Calls AI a 'Trojan Horse' Amidst Public Skepticism

Oscar-winning director Christopher Nolan has characterized artificial intelligence (AI) as a "Trojan horse," suggesting its potential dangers are already widely acknowledged.

Speaking in a YouTube interview with content creator Hugo Travers, Nolan responded to a comparison between AI and the Trojan horse element in his film "Oppenheimer." Travers inquired if AI could become something initially welcomed but later revealed to be sinister. Nolan stated, "I think AI is a Trojan horse that everyone knows the Greeks are inside of." He further described the technology as "a transparent horse, made of glass."

Nolan observed that few technologies have advanced as rapidly while simultaneously facing such significant public resistance. He highlighted the widespread suspicion towards AI, particularly among younger generations, who have quickly labeled AI-generated content as "AI slop." According to Nolan, this public skepticism is vital, preventing the technology from being accepted without critical examination of its consequences and the intentions of its creators.

"This is a very healthy skepticism, because technology will always give us great gifts, as you say, but it must be viewed with skepticism," Nolan commented. "The motives of the people giving it to us must also be viewed with skepticism. That way, we will get the best benefits from new technology, rather than just blindly believing that everything will be fine."

While Nolan did not specify the exact threats posed by AI, concerns about the technology are prominent in Hollywood. The Directors Guild of America (DGA), which Nolan leads, has secured protections regarding generative AI in its latest labor contracts. Nolan himself remains cautious about adopting new technologies, continuing to use film for production and making "Oppenheimer" the first feature film shot entirely on IMAX film cameras.
