Christopher Nolan: 'I Knew 'Interstellar' Was Popular in Korea, I Always Wanted to Visit'

Acclaimed director Christopher Nolan finally made his first visit to South Korea, a country where his films have garnered significant popularity. Nolan, accompanied by producer Emma Thomas, attended a press conference in Seoul for his latest film, 'Odyssey.'

I've wanted to come to Korea for a very long time, and I wanted to bring my films here.

He recalled the strong audience response to 'Interstellar,' noting its extended theatrical run in South Korea. "It's fascinating when a film you make is loved in countries you haven't visited," he said, explaining that this appreciation fueled his desire to experience the country firsthand.

Nolan mentioned that he had previously attempted to visit for 'Tenet' but was prevented by the COVID-19 pandemic. "I'm very much looking forward to meeting the Korean people for the first time," he added. The director and his entourage arrived in South Korea on August 1st and are scheduled to meet with fans on the red carpet on August 4th, the day before the film's release.

'Odyssey' tells the story of Odysseus, the hero who led the Trojans to victory in the 10-year Trojan War, as he embarks on a journey to return to his wife Penelope and son Telemachus. The film stars Matt Damon as Odysseus, Anne Hathaway as Penelope, and Tom Holland as Telemachus. This marks Nolan's latest work following acclaimed films such as 'Interstellar,' 'Dunkirk,' 'Tenet,' and 'Oppenheimer,' which have collectively drawn over 36 million viewers in South Korea alone. 'Odyssey' is set to open in theaters nationwide on August 5th.
