Chung Hsiao-ping Calls Ko Wen-je a ‘Toxic Lover’; Wu Yi-hsuan Fires Back

Taiwan People’s Party candidate Wu Yi-hsuan answered Chung Hsiao-ping’s attack on former party chairman Ko Wen-je with a question of her own: “Can you survive without Ko Wen-je?”

Chung, a Kuomintang Taipei City councilor, had described Ko as a “toxic lover.” Wu responded while accompanying Ko and current party chairman Huang Kuo-chang to register their candidacies with the election commission. She also compared Chung to Team Rocket from Pokémon, adding that his comments gave her “a really unpleasant feeling.”

Wu accused Chung of repeatedly using Ko’s name for political purposes. She said that during Chung’s previous legislative election campaign, he had placed a large sign near a school on voting day saying Ko Wen-je was his sole supporter, despite allegedly violating election rules. She also accused him of spreading claims on television about transfers of NT$300 million to NT$400 million in connection with Ko’s case, before apologizing to Ko and asking for mercy in court.

Wu said Chung was now trying to benefit politically from Ko again during candidate registration. Turning Chung’s phrase around, she said voters should keep their eyes open during the election and urged them to do so at the end of the year. Asked whether Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an’s decision not to campaign individually for TPP council candidates could hurt them, Wu said Ko and Huang were two highly visible figures accompanying the candidates. She added that campaigns ultimately depended on each candidate’s own effort, even though all assistance would be welcome.
