Chungbuk elections marred by reciprocal accusations, policy debates sidelined

With the local elections just around the corner, the political landscape in Chungbuk province is becoming increasingly heated, marked by a barrage of reciprocal accusations and personal attacks between candidates and their political camps. This intense campaigning appears to be sidelining substantive policy debates, focusing instead on discrediting opponents.

One notable dispute involves the candidates for Chungbuk governor. Shin Yong-han of the Democratic Party and Kim Young-hwan of the People Power Party have traded accusations. Shin has filed a complaint with prosecutors against Kim for alleged defamation and spreading false information, particularly concerning Kim's repeated questioning of Shin's use of a "burner phone" and alleged involvement with JTBC reporting. Kim's camp has retaliated by raising suspicions about Shin's alleged involvement in procuring burner phones, using a secret hideout, mass distribution of illegal election texts, and covering personal expenses for a campaign aide.

Shin needs to explain various suspicions, including tax issues. For the sake of citizens' right to know and policy-based elections, I propose a conclusive debate.

The election committee has already taken action, referring three cases for investigation and filing two official complaints as of April 28. This reflects the severity of the campaign tactics being employed. The tension is palpable, with candidates urging an immediate halt to baseless allegations and negative campaigning.

Adding to the contentious atmosphere, Kim Sung-geun, a candidate for Chungbuk Superintendent of Education, faces calls for resignation from the campaign committee of rival Yoon Geon-young. The controversy stems from remarks made by Lee Ki-yong, an honorary campaign committee member for Yoon, who allegedly downplayed the Oseong disaster and made comments perceived as politically motivated attacks. This has led to a formal complaint against Lee for defamation and insult by the Oseong disaster victims' families' association.
