Chwalinska Makes History, Reaches French Open Final

Poland's Maja Chwalinska has achieved a historic milestone at the French Open, becoming the first qualifier in the professional era to reach the prestigious tournament's final. She secured her spot by defeating Diana Shnaider in a hard-fought semifinal match.

Ranked 114th in the world, Chwalinska overcame Shnaider with a score of 7-6 (7/4), 6-4. She now faces Russia's Mirra Andreeva, who advanced to the final earlier after defeating Marta Kostyuk. Chwalinska's remarkable run includes nine consecutive victories, starting from the qualifying rounds.

Should Chwalinska win the final against Andreeva, she would become only the second woman in the Open Era to win a Grand Slam title after coming through the qualifying rounds. This achievement would follow Emma Raducanu's success at the 2021 U.S. Open. Chwalinska expressed her disbelief and joy following her semifinal victory on Court Philippe Chatrier.

Her path to the final saw her defeat notable players, including Olympic gold medalist Zheng Qinwen in the first round, as well as Elise Mertens, Maria Sakkari, Diane Parry, and Anna Kalinskaya. This success is projected to propel Chwalinska to a career-high ranking of at least world number 21. Meanwhile, 19-year-old Andreeva reached her first Grand Slam final with a dominant 6-1, 6-3 victory over Kostyuk, avenging a previous loss in the Madrid Open final.
