Cigarette Butt Ignites Fire in Brakel Thistle Field

A carelessly discarded cigarette butt sparked a significant fire in a thistle field in Everbeek, Brakel, on Wednesday afternoon, highlighting the dangers posed by dry conditions.

The flames flared up to 5 meters high.

The blaze erupted near Muiterij in the Everbeek Boven district. The dry ground quickly fueled the flames, causing several square meters of the field to erupt in fire that reportedly reached heights of up to 5 meters. The owner of the field described the dramatic scene, noting the rapid spread of the fire.

Fortunately, neighbors responded swiftly, using garden hoses and buckets of water to help contain the fire before the fire department arrived. Their quick actions, combined with the firefighters' efforts, prevented the blaze from spreading further. The fire scorched meters of hedges on both sides of the field and blackened young beech plants along a walking path. Another hedge across the property also sustained damage.

Fortunately, we received help from the neighbors. They came with garden hoses and buckets of water to help control the fire. The fire department had little trouble extinguishing the fire afterward.

The owner expressed relief that the fire did not spread to an adjacent oak tree, noting only some discolored and withered leaves as evidence of the near-miss. The intervention also prevented the fire from reaching nearby stables. While the fire briefly threatened an adjacent meadow, the damage there remained very limited. Homes located dozens of meters away were not in danger.
