Cinema festival lets audiences see films for five euros this weekend

For five euros, audiences in Hesse can watch a film this weekend as participating cinemas join the nationwide Cinema Festival on September 12 and 13.

The organizers said the offer covers all films, seats and genres at participating theaters. The discounted program includes current releases, classics and previews, meaning films shown before their official release.

Cinemas in Frankfurt, Wiesbaden, Fulda, Giessen and Darmstadt are taking part, along with venues in Fritzlar, Nidda, Büdingen, Limburg, Langen and Hofheim. The organizers said the event brings together the full range of Germany’s cinema industry, from small rural venues and art-house theaters to mid-sized cinemas and large multiplexes.

On these two days, nationwide, all films, all seats and all genres cost only five euros in all participating cinemas.

Hesse Culture Minister Timon Gremmels of the Social Democratic Party is scheduled to visit Filmpalast Kassel at 5 p.m. on Sunday. Organizers said he will hand out popcorn before watching Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey” on the big screen. Hesse’s state premier, Boris Rhein of the Christian Democratic Union, serves as the festival’s political patron.

Hundreds of cinemas across Germany are expected to participate. Industry groups HDF Kino and AllScreens organize the event with other associations. Organizers said 1.65 million people visited participating German cinemas during the two festival days last year.
