CIoD Launches Chartered Director Certification Programme to Raise Directorship Standards

The Chartered Institute of Directors Nigeria has launched a new certification programme intended to move directors from accumulated experience to formally assessed professional competence.

Successful candidates in the Chartered Director Certification programme will receive the Chartered Director designation and be entitled to use the suffix “Ch.Dir.” The institute introduced the programme after gaining chartered status under the Chartered Institute of Directors Nigeria (Establishment) Act, 2023.

Today, we have unveiled more than a certification programme. We have affirmed a higher standard for directorship and renewed our commitment to building better directors, stronger boards and more resilient institutions.

The programme uses a flexible blended-learning model with three stages: the Certificate in Company Directorship, the Advanced Certificate in Company Directorship and Chartered Directorship. The final stage involves an experience-based assessment and a professional interview focused on how candidates apply knowledge, experience and judgment in boardroom situations.

First Vice President Amina Oyagbola called the launch a significant milestone, saying: “Today, we have unveiled more than a certification programme. We have affirmed a higher standard for directorship and renewed our commitment to building better directors, stronger boards and more resilient institutions.” Committee chairman Foluso Olaniyan said the programme offers a path from professional experience to examined competence and accountable recognition. Director-General Taiwo Nolas-Alausa said its ultimate goal was to improve the quality of judgment and accountability directors bring to the boardroom.
