CJN warns judges against misconduct, social media indiscretions

As the Chief Justice of Nigeria, I must address a critical issue facing our judiciary: the conduct of judicial officers, particularly in the digital age. The increasing visibility of judges on social media platforms presents new ethical challenges that demand our utmost attention. It is imperative that we exercise heightened caution and sound judgment to preserve the dignity of our offices and the integrity of the justice system.

The legitimacy of judicial authority depends not only on the correctness of decisions, but also on the confidence reposed in the courts by the public.

The legitimacy of our courts rests not solely on the accuracy of our rulings, but crucially on the confidence the public places in us. In an era where information spreads instantaneously, any lapse in ethical conduct, however unintentional, can have far-reaching consequences. Judicial officers must consistently uphold principles of independence, impartiality, integrity, propriety, equality, competence, and diligence, both within and beyond the courtroom.

Judicial actions and expressions are now subject to immediate and widespread public scrutiny. These realities require Judicial Officers to exercise heightened caution, sound judgment, and a clear understanding of the ethical boundaries of judicial engagement.

We are aware of recurring ethical dilemmas, including conflicts of interest and extra-judicial engagements. These situations require careful discretion, guided by the Code of Conduct for Judicial Officers. The actions of superior court judges set a precedent for judicial practice nationwide. Therefore, clear, consistent, and principled conduct is essential to foster coherence and predictability within the justice system, thereby strengthening public trust.
