Clash on the streets of Monaco: Pogačar and Roglič headline Vuelta a España start

The Vuelta a España, one of cycling's three Grand Tours, has commenced with its opening stage, a time trial held in the glamorous principality of Monaco. This year's race marks the return of Slovenian star Tadej Pogačar (UAE Emirates) to the Spanish Grand Tour, a significant event as he seeks to conquer the final major stage race missing from his impressive collection.

Joining Pogačar on the starting line is fellow Slovenian Primož Roglič (Red Bull Bora Hansgrohe). Roglič, a four-time winner of the Vuelta, faces a challenging path to a potential fifth overall victory. His preparation has been hampered by a recent crash, casting a shadow over his readiness for the demanding three-week race.

Despite the obstacles, the presence of both Pogačar and Roglič, alongside six other Slovenian cyclists, underscores the strong contingent from Slovenia in this year's competition. The race is set to unfold over challenging terrain, with the iconic red jersey, awarded to the overall leader, being the ultimate prize.
