Claudia Villafañe Recalls How Maradona Secretly Went Out Clubbing

Diego Maradona once pushed his car to the corner before starting it, trying to leave quietly for a night out without Claudia Villafañe finding out.

Villafañe recalled the story while appearing on the television program La cocina rebelde. She said she began dating Maradona when she was 15, at a time when her friends went dancing at Zodíaco. Maradona sometimes went out alone, she said, and his outings were hardly secret because he would appear on the front page of a newspaper the next day.

I started dating very young, at 15. At that time my friends went dancing at Zodíaco. At 15 or 16, I was already going with Diego.

She said Maradona had bought a car and, on one occasion, pushed it down the street until a passing bus covered the sound of the engine starting. The plan did not keep the night hidden for long.

Once he went out alone. We lived across the passage from each other, and he had bought the car and pushed it to the corner when a bus passed so I would not hear the car start.

The person who exposed him was his father. Villafañe said she sometimes stopped by Maradona’s house on her way to school. One morning, Don Diego answered the door angrily and asked her whether she thought the hour at which they had returned the previous night was acceptable.

Villafañe replied that she had not gone out. Don Diego immediately realized his mistake, cursed and left. She said Maradona later scolded his father, but the incident eventually became a joke.
