'Claudia, will you come?': Sheinbaum attends World Cup final after Trump invitation

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum attended the 2026 World Cup final in New York, witnessing Spain's victory over Argentina. Her attendance followed a canceled trip and a direct invitation from U.S. President Donald Trump, who personally invited her to sit with him.

Sheinbaum shared a hospitality box at the MetLife Stadium with Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, and Spain's King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia. Describing the atmosphere as "very cordial," Sheinbaum engaged in conversations with Trump and Carney, touching upon pending bilateral matters, including trade.

While acknowledging that the match was not the venue for in-depth negotiations, Sheinbaum stated she conveyed to Trump that "we have several pending issues" and expressed hope for future phone calls. The World Cup final provided a platform to reflect on the bilateral relationship between Mexico and the United States.

Sheinbaum emphasized the importance of prioritizing diplomatic relations and promoting a good neighbor policy, citing the shared border, the presence of 40 million Mexicans in the U.S., and mutual respect. She noted that while disagreements may exist with President Trump, personal animosity is unnecessary, highlighting his respectful demeanor towards her and her reciprocal respect.
