Clausura 2026 standings after Round 8: Four teams lead the groups

The eighth round of Argentina's 2026 Clausura ended with four teams sharing the lead across Groups A and B, while several traditional clubs remained in pursuit.

Instituto de Córdoba lost 3-2 to Unión in Santa Fe but stayed on 16 points in Group A. Gimnasia de Mendoza drew 2-2 with Boca and moved to the top on goal difference, alongside Vélez, who beat Estudiantes de La Plata 1-0 at the José Amalfitani and remain the competition's only unbeaten side.

Boca could not climb the table after the draw but stayed eighth, inside the playoff places. Independiente beat Central Córdoba de Santiago del Estero 1-0 to reach sixth with 13 points. San Lorenzo also returned to winning form, defeating Talleres de Córdoba 1-0 at the Nuevo Gasómetro and moving into contention for the round of 16 despite remaining outside the qualifying positions.

The Rosario derby between Central and Newell's ended 1-1. Newell's held 12 points in Group A, while Central had the same total in Group B. Argentinos Juniors remained first in that group with 17 points after a scoreless draw against Barracas Central. Sarmiento de Junín and Gimnasia de La Plata followed on 15 points. Sarmiento beat Estudiantes de Río Cuarto 2-0 away in a match described as important for its fight to avoid relegation, while Gimnasia defeated Tigre 2-1 at home.

River beat Independiente Rivadavia de Mendoza 3-1 at the Monumental to reach 10 points and tenth place, just outside the playoff positions. Racing lost 2-1 to Atlético Tucumán at the Cilindro and remained last in Group B on five points, level with Aldosivi, who beat Banfield 3-1.

The Clausura features 30 clubs split into two groups of 15. Each team plays 16 matches, and the top eight in each group advance to the playoffs, beginning with the round of 16. The champion will qualify for the 2026 Champions Trophy.
