Walter Montoya scores spectacular halfway-line goal for Gimnasia y Tiro

Walter Montoya waited until stoppage time, then launched a right-footed shot from beyond the halfway line that flew over the stranded goalkeeper and into the net.

The goal completed Gimnasia y Tiro de Salta's 3-1 away win over Atlético Güemes de Santiago del Estero in the 28th round of Argentina's Primera Nacional. Gimnasia led 2-1 after 90 minutes when referee Juan Manuel Azconzábal added five minutes.

Güemes lost possession through striker Iván Ortigoza, allowing Montoya to take the ball and drive forward rather than slow the game down. Before reaching the halfway line, the midfielder struck the ball. Leandro Finochietto, outside his area, tried to race back to goal, but the shot passed him and reached the net.

Montoya's teammates ran to celebrate with the player wearing number 18, and the goal quickly spread across social media. The broadcast commentator praised the midfielder for using his experience and quality in the final move.

"It was crazy. I just got hold of it and luckily it went in. It helped settle the match a little. I am happier to leave with the win and with all the effort from the team," Montoya said after the game.

Lautaro Gordillo and Franco Sivetti scored Gimnasia's other goals, while Juan Sánchez pulled one back for Güemes. Gimnasia moved to fifth in Group B with 44 points, while Güemes stayed 18th on 23. Montoya has previously played for Rosario Central, Sevilla, Cruz Azul, Racing Club, Central Córdoba and Godoy Cruz.
