Clerk's Silent Alarm Foils Romance Scam, Saves Woman From Losing $25,000

A woman in Taiwan narrowly avoided a significant financial loss thanks to the vigilance of a convenience store clerk and the swift response of local police. The woman, identified by her surname Chiu, was attempting to purchase NT$25,000 worth of game points, believing they were needed to unfreeze her fiancé's bank account.

The incident unfolded when Ms. Chiu, appearing flustered, approached the convenience store counter and requested the large purchase of game points. The clerk, recognizing the situation as potentially fraudulent, discreetly used a special silent alarm code on their mobile phone to notify the police. This discreet action allowed authorities to arrive quickly without alarming the potential victim.

The clerk saw that the situation was unusual and, to avoid alerting the person, immediately took out their phone and scanned the police's exclusive silent alarm barcode to report it.

Upon arrival, officers from the Yuping Police Station patiently engaged with Ms. Chiu. She explained that she had met a man online who claimed his bank account was frozen and that she needed to buy game points to help him. The police were able to demonstrate how this was a common romance scam tactic, showing her real-world examples. Realizing she was being deceived, Ms. Chiu canceled the purchase, and her savings were secured.
