Closing arguments begin in Massachusetts trial of nurse accused of killing her children

Jurors in the Lindsay Clancy murder trial are poised to hear closing arguments Thursday, marking a critical juncture before they deliberate on whether the former labor and delivery nurse is criminally responsible for the deaths of her three young children in 2023.

The central point of contention is not whether Clancy committed the acts, but her state of mind at the time. Her defense team contends she was suffering from postpartum psychosis, a severe mental health emergency affecting a person's sense of reality, and has filed lawsuits accusing medical providers of failing to properly diagnose and treat her condition. Conversely, prosecutors from the Plymouth County District Attorney's office argue that Clancy intentionally planned the killings.

Postpartum psychosis affects an estimated 1 to 2 per 1,000 women after delivery. While it can occur in any new mother, the risk is higher for those with pre-existing mental health conditions. Although most individuals experiencing postpartum psychosis do not harm their children, severe cases can lead to such actions, as well as self-harm.

The more children you have, the harder it gets. So I feel like women just need support from mental health professionals, physicians, family and the justice system.

Outside the courthouse, supporters, many dressed in pink, gathered to draw attention to women's mental health issues. "I feel that mental health is at the cornerstone of this, but so is community, family, and we need to believe women," said Marta Quijano, emphasizing the need for support and belief in women seeking help. Physician Lyn Feeney added that new mothers require comprehensive support from mental health professionals, physicians, family, and the justice system.

The defense's final witness, forensic psychiatrist Dr. Phillip Resnick, testified that Clancy was "clearly psychotic" on the day of the killings and not in control of her actions, comparing her state to being "a puppet and someone else was pulling the strings." Resnick previously testified in the high-profile trial of Andrea Yates, a Texas mother who drowned her five children in 2001.
