Cluj's Sky Ignites: 400 Drones Paint City's Spirit in Multimedia Spectacle

Cluj-Napoca, Romania, lit up the night sky with "The Big Picture," a stunning 8-minute drone show that captivated over 100,000 festival-goers during the city's 14th annual festival. The spectacle, performed between concerts by Vița de Vie and Delia, featured 400 drones choreographed in real-time with lights and architectural videomapping.

The show's narrative embraced local spirit, opening with a giant Polaroid camera outline and the message "E fain la Cluj" (It's nice in Cluj). It then transitioned to iconic city buildings, musical notes, dynamic hearts, and a bee swarm symbolizing the community's vibrancy. The finale projected a monumental "Happy Birthday, Cluj-Napoca!" wish.

Behind the fluid aerial dance was a precision engineering feat by EVSKY Drone Show, a company that has provided key aerial moments for the festival for five consecutive years. This year, they integrated multimedia elements, allowing drones to interact directly with the central square's architecture through light shows and projections on historic facades. The sophisticated control system, EVSKY Studio, is Romanian-developed software capable of managing complex 3D geometries safely.

Unlike many European operators using imported equipment, EVSKY's technology is designed and assembled in Romania. What began as a small experiment in 2020 has grown into a fleet of over 700 drones and an operating system licensed across three continents. "Returning to the same city, on the same stage, with a better show – that's the best validation we can receive. The drone show's success underscores a growing trend in Romania's major urban events: a shift towards sustainable entertainment. Cluj continues to be a benchmark in this digital transition, with EVSKY also producing large-scale shows for New Year's Eve and Romania's National Day. Friday night's performance demonstrated how technology and visual design are ushering in a new era of mass public entertainment.
