CNTE secures over 1,300 new teaching positions in Oaxaca after meeting with President Sheinbaum

Teachers in Oaxaca have secured over 1,300 new positions following a meeting with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum. The agreement, reached after nearly four hours of talks at the National Palace, also covers issues like hiring, reclassification, and school uniforms. Yenny Pérez, the general secretary of the CNTE's section 22, described the meeting with the federal leader as important, stating that "The President's presence reaffirms that there are agreements that were made and not concluded."

While the new positions will take effect with the upcoming school year on September 1, Pérez noted that "there is a backlog" in hiring that still needs to be addressed. The teachers' union also plans to continue advocating for "dignified retirement for all workers." The Secretary of Public Education, Mario Delgado, called the meeting "very good and very orderly," confirming agreements on uniforms and new positions, though he did not specify the number of new hires.

Beyond immediate educational needs, the meeting also addressed ensuring electricity for all schools in Oaxaca through a future discussion with the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE). Additionally, the status of teachers who have been imprisoned during protest actions was reviewed. The SEP head also highlighted the distribution of the Rita Cetina scholarship, benefiting hundreds of thousands of students across primary and secondary levels in Oaxaca, with a total investment in scholarships for the state nearing 6.3 billion pesos.
