Morena lawmakers to revive impeachment process against PRI leader Alito Moreno

Lawmakers from the ruling Morena party in Mexico announced their intention to revive impeachment proceedings against Alejandro Moreno, the national leader of the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI). The accusations stem from Moreno's alleged denunciation of the National Electoral Institute's (INE) designation of Morena as a "narcopartido" (narco-party) to U.S. justice authorities.

Senator Manuel Huerta Ladrón de Guevara of Morena criticized Moreno for seeking foreign intervention in domestic matters, calling it a betrayal of the homeland. Senator Óscar Cantón Zetina echoed these sentiments, stating that such actions, if proven to involve losing constitutional immunity, should be pursued. Both emphasized that the law should be applied impartially, regardless of political affiliation, while respecting due process.

These political maneuvers coincide with recent legal actions. Carlos Alberto Medina Hernández, former director of Social Communication under Moreno's administration in Campeche, was arrested on charges of embezzlement for allegedly diverting 36 million pesos through the Mayavisión television station. Authorities are also investigating payments totaling 97 million pesos to Mayavisión. Additionally, Luis Antonio Espinosa Campos, an accountant who provided services to Emigdio Gabriel Moreno Cárdenas (Alejandro Moreno's brother), was arrested in Mexico City in connection with a separate alleged multimillion-dollar embezzlement case in Campeche.
