Cobolli rallies from two sets down to beat world No. 119

Flavio Cobolli overturned a two-set deficit and came back from 2-0 down in the fifth set to defeat Francisco Comesana at the US Open. The sixth-seeded Italian won 3-6, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 after four hours and 13 minutes.

Comesana, ranked 119th by the ATP, was within reach of one of the biggest victories of his career. Cobolli, ranked sixth and a finalist at this year’s Roland Garros, found a solution to the Argentine’s strong form after leaving the court before the third set.

The match took place under the retractable roof at Louis Armstrong Stadium. Rain prevented play on the outdoor courts, making the roof one of the tournament’s practical advantages on Tuesday. Louis Armstrong was one of three stadiums with a movable roof in use.

Cobolli will face the winner of the match between American qualifier Nishesh Basavareddy, ranked 163rd, and Australia’s Tristan Schoolkate, ranked 180th. Elsewhere, Madison Keys defeated 19-year-old Russian Alina Korneyeva 7-5, 6-4 in 95 minutes. Ninth seed Taylor Fritz needed five minutes more to beat 18-year-old American wildcard Darwin Blanch 6-3, 6-2, 6-4.
