Cold Front Brings Showers and Thunderstorms to Austria

Austria is bracing for a shift in weather patterns as a cold front sweeps in from the west, promising a mix of sunshine, showers, and thunderstorms. Experts from Geosphere Austria predict that Friday will see increasingly cloudy skies throughout the day, with the potential for strong thunderstorms developing in Vorarlberg and Tyrol by the afternoon.

These storms are expected to spread eastward by evening, potentially reaching Salzburg and parts of Upper Austria. The prevailing moderate to lively south wind will shift to the west with the approaching front and intensify. Early morning temperatures are forecast to range between 14 and 20 degrees Celsius, with daytime highs reaching between 27 and 35 degrees, particularly in the Föhn regions between Salzburg and Mostviertel.

Following the stormy Friday, the weekend is anticipated to bring more settled conditions. Saturday will start with lingering clouds and residual showers in many areas, but the sun is expected to break through increasingly as the day progresses. While isolated showers might still occur, especially in the south and southwest, daytime temperatures will range from 24 to 30 degrees Celsius.

Sunday is predicted to be largely sunny across much of Austria, with only high-altitude clouds expected. Local cumulus clouds may form in the mountains and southern areas by the afternoon, potentially bringing brief, isolated showers. However, the general outlook for the start of the week is for a return to more unsettled weather. Monday and Tuesday are forecast to see an increase in showers and thunderstorms due to unstable air masses moving into the Eastern Alps.
