Colombia beats Ghana to secure final World Cup Round of 16 spot

Colombia has claimed the last available ticket to the Round of 16 at the FIFA World Cup, hosted in the USA, Mexico, and Canada. They defeated Ghana 1-0 in Kansas City, with Jhon Arias scoring the sole goal in the 14th minute. Colombia finished atop Group K, having previously beaten Uzbekistan 3-1 and DR Congo 1-0, and drawing 1-1 with Portugal.

Ghana, meanwhile, lost 1-2 to Croatia, then defeated Panama 1-0, and drew 0-0 with England. In the match against Colombia, the South Americans dominated from the start. They registered eight shots on target at the Arrowhead Stadium and took an early lead. After a pass from Luis Javier Suarez, who replaced the injured Jhon Cardobo in the eighth minute, Arias beat the Ghanaian goalkeeper to put Colombia ahead.

Ghana appeared lost in the first half, failing to register a single shot on target. Colombia, under Argentine coach Nestor Lorenzo, continued their rhythm after halftime. Luis Diaz scored a second goal in the 56th minute, but it was disallowed for offside. Colombia maintained control throughout the remainder of the match, advancing to the knockout stage for the fourth time in their World Cup history. Their best performance was in 2014 in Brazil, where they reached the quarterfinals before losing to the host nation.
