Colombia beats Uzbekistan 3-1 in World Cup 2026 opener

Colombia secured a 3-1 victory over Uzbekistan in their 2026 World Cup debut, marking South America's second win in the tournament after Argentina's. The win places Colombia at the top of Group K.

Uzbekistan, playing in their first World Cup, adopted a defensive strategy, allowing Colombia to control possession. Despite holding off Colombia for most of the first half, Daniel Muñoz broke the deadlock in the 40th minute. Uzbekistan fought back in the second half, with Abbosbek Fayzullaev equalizing in the 60th minute after a rebound from a save by goalkeeper Vargas.

However, Colombia quickly regained the lead. Luis Díaz scored in the 65th minute, finding the net with a precise shot after a midfield ball recovery. Coach Fabio Cannavaro made attacking substitutions to push for another equalizer, but Colombia sealed their victory in stoppage time. Jaminton Campaz headed home a precise cross from Cucho Hernández in the ninth minute of added time, making the final score 3-1.

Colombia's next match is against Congo on Thursday, June 23, while Portugal will face Uzbekistan in the other Group K fixture.
