Colombia deploys 11,000 troops for presidential inauguration in Cali

Colombia is mobilizing an unprecedented security force of over 11,000 military and police officers for President-elect Abelardo de la Espriella's inauguration. The ceremony, scheduled for August 7 in Cali, will be the first presidential inauguration held outside the capital, Bogotá. This significant move aims to send a message of support to the military in a region long affected by guerrilla warfare and drug trafficking.

The extensive security operation will encompass the entire Cali metropolitan area, home to over 2.7 million people. It will utilize land, maritime, riverine, and aerial assets to ensure the safety of the event. Authorities have also decided to restrict the use of private drones in the city's airspace. The Ministry of Defense cited the risk posed by these devices, which have been used by guerrilla groups to transport explosives and carry out attacks against security forces and civilians in conflict zones.

Interim Minister of Defense Angélica Verbel assured that the state is fully prepared to guarantee security before, during, and after the inauguration. "The Colombian state is prepared to guarantee security before, during, and after the presidential inauguration. Our purpose is one: to ensure that this day unfolds with absolute normality, tranquility, and full respect for our institutions," she stated. The security plan also includes continuous aerial monitoring by army and air force helicopters and aircraft to swiftly support any necessary responses.

This historic relocation of the inauguration to Cali was a deliberate choice by President-elect de la Espriella. He aims to signal solidarity with the armed forces in a region that has endured decades of violence. International dignitaries, including King Felipe VI of Spain and the presidents of Argentina and Paraguay, are expected to attend, underscoring the event's national and international significance.
