Venezuela congratulates Keiko Fujimori on Peru presidency

Venezuela's interim government has extended congratulations and wishes for success to Keiko Fujimori following her inauguration as president of Peru for the 2026-2031 constitutional term. The message, released by the Venezuelan Ministry of Foreign Affairs, also offered special felicitations to Peru on the occasion of its 205th independence anniversary.

"As we commemorate this significant date, Venezuela also takes the opportunity to congratulate the people of Peru on the assumption of office by their elected president, Keiko Fujimori, to whom we wish the greatest success in the exercise of her duties," the official statement read.

The support from Venezuela's interim administration comes after both nations confirmed on July 24 the commencement of a gradual process to re-establish diplomatic relations, which had been severed for two years. In its statement, the interim government led by Delcy Rodríguez expressed its "firm commitment to strengthening dialogue ties" with Fujimori's incoming administration.

Fujimori, 51, stated, "I will faithfully exercise the office of president of the republic that the nation has entrusted to me." She is the second woman to lead Peru, following Dina Boluarte. Her victory in June, by fewer than 50,000 votes against leftist candidate Roberto Sánchez, marks the return of Fujimorismo to Peruvian politics. The inauguration on July 28 coincides with the birthday of her father, former President Alberto Fujimori (1990-2000), and her win reinforces a conservative-liberal trend that has historically divided Peruvian society.
