Colombia earthquake: Families desperately seek to identify loved ones amid ongoing anguish

The air of uncertainty and anguish hangs heavy at the National Institute of Forensic Medicine and Forensic Sciences in Palmira, Colombia. Dozens of families are converging at the facility, desperately seeking to confirm the fate of loved ones who vanished in a recent earthquake that rattled Cali and other Colombian cities.

Among those waiting is María Eugenia, who is searching for her cousin, a healthcare professional named Isabel Guasaquillo Chávez. Contact with Isabel was lost on the day of the tremor, and her family was directed to the forensic institute. They are providing photographs and other materials to aid in the identification process.

"There are many people and much confusion. The Red Cross and psychologists have treated us very well, giving us water and support, but the anxiety and sadness are immense. One doesn't want to find their relative here, but we need certainty to give them a proper burial," María Eugenia shared, her voice heavy with emotion.

Jorge, another relative present, is searching for his sister Claudia, who worked in a building that collapsed during the earthquake. After hours of waiting outdoors, he hopes to enter the fingerprint and identification rooms soon. "It's tremendous anguish. You hold onto the hope that it's all a misunderstanding until the last second, but seeing so much suffering breaks your heart," Jorge said, reflecting on the difficult scene.

Humanitarian aid, including medical attention, psychological support, and spiritual guidance, is being provided to mitigate the impact of the earthquake on the affected population. Forensic experts continue their protocols for verifying and releasing the bodies recovered from the disaster.
