Two die by drowning in Chiriquí; 10 victims this year

Chiriquí province has recorded two more drowning deaths, bringing the total number of fatalities from immersion incidents in Panama to 10 this year. The latest victims, a 50-year-old and a 63-year-old, were tragically swept away by strong currents in the districts of Alanje and Boquerón, respectively.

The National Civil Protection System (Sinaproc) reiterated its call for the public to adhere to preventive measures, particularly when engaging in activities near rivers, beaches, and other water bodies. The agency has issued a vigilance and prevention notice for the Pacific coast from August 12 to 17 due to strong tides.

Sinaproc advised small vessels to exercise extreme caution and ensure they have the necessary safety equipment before setting sail. They also urged special attention to children, the elderly, and individuals with disabilities, emphasizing the importance of staying informed through official Sinaproc announcements. Despite the presence of El Niño, Chiriquí has experienced intense rainfall, especially in its mountainous regions, leading to rising river levels and the risk of flash floods, particularly in low-lying areas.
