Colombia Earthquake: Great Depth Limits Damage, Experts Say

A significant earthquake, initially measured at 7.4 magnitude and later revised to 7.2, struck Colombia at a considerable depth of 110 kilometers. He explained that Colombia's seismic zone is distinct from Caracas's, involving a different tectonic plate. The significant depth of the tremor means it was felt over a wide area, but it is less likely to cause the extensive damage seen in Venezuela. Despite the reduced risk of severe damage due to the depth, residents are understandably anxious, especially after experiencing the recent tremors from Venezuela. Lekkas cautioned that while a tsunami is not anticipated, buildings in Latin American countries are often vulnerable to earthquakes. He concluded that while the full extent of the impact is yet to be determined, it is unlikely to mirror the devastation observed in Venezuela.
