Colombia Earthquake: The Final Act of Kindness from "Lucho," the Hero Who Gave His Life to Save Others

The Chocó department in Colombia is reeling from a devastating earthquake that struck on August 10, leaving a trail of destruction and fear. Amidst the rubble, the story of Luis Alberto Rivas Salguero, affectionately known as "Lucho," has emerged, highlighting an act of profound sacrifice.

When the earthquake hit, Luis Alberto managed to escape his collapsing home in Quibdó. However, instead of seeking safety, he bravely returned to help someone trapped under the debris, successfully rescuing them. Tragically, as he went back into the ruins to assist another person, the building collapsed definitively, trapping him.

The community in the Medrano sector, where the incident occurred, mobilized quickly, with nearly 80% of neighbors working tirelessly to clear the rubble. They also urgently called for official support in the search efforts. Despite hours of intense work, Luis Alberto's body was found lifeless around 3:00 AM.

His aunt, Mercedes Palacios Moreno, expressed deep sorrow over his unexpected death, calling him a victim of the disastrous earthquake. A cousin confirmed that "Lucho" had saved one person before the structure gave way. The loss has also been felt in Yolombó, Antioquia, where local officials extended condolences to his father.

"Lucho" is among the 14 confirmed fatalities in Chocó due to the earthquake. National figures from the Institute of Legal Medicine report over 200 bodies received, with local authorities suggesting more than 240 deaths. The disaster also injured 2,595 people across the western part of the country.
