Colombian Airports Damaged by Magnitude 7.4 Earthquake

A powerful magnitude 7.4 earthquake has caused damage to at least six airports across Colombia, leading to the suspension of air operations for safety assessments. The affected airports include those in Pereira, Manizales, Quibdó, Armenia, Cartago, and Buenaventura. The Aeronáutica Civil (Aerocivil) reported the damage and stated that air traffic remains halted at these terminals until structural integrity can be confirmed.

The earthquake struck a significant portion of the country, with severe impacts reported in western and central cities. The epicenter was located in San José del Palmar, in the Chocó department, at a depth of 82 kilometers, according to the Colombian Geological Service (SGC). In Pereira, part of a roof collapsed in an area with people, though no injuries or fatalities were immediately confirmed. Videos circulating online showed debris falling from buildings and people seeking safety during the tremors.

In Manizales, the capital of Caldas, significant damage was reported, including building collapses and damage to the cathedral's tower. The airport in Quibdó, the capital of Chocó, is crucial for the Pacific region where the earthquake's epicenter was located. Other affected airports serve the Valle del Cauca department, including Cartago and Buenaventura. Cali, the capital of Valle del Cauca, reported at least 20 building collapses.

Aerocivil is continuously monitoring the situation and advises travelers to stay updated through official channels and their airlines, as flight schedules may be disrupted. The full extent of the damage and potential casualties is still being assessed across the affected regions.
