Colombian Army loses contact with large group of soldiers in conflict zone

The Colombian Army has reported a concerning loss of contact with a significant contingent of soldiers operating in the rural area of El Retorno, Guaviare. This communication blackout, which began Friday night, has raised alarms, particularly given the volatile security situation in the region. While the official explanation points to severe weather impacting the internal communication network, the lack of precise numbers regarding the affected personnel fuels speculation and concern.

Guaviare, a department characterized by its dense jungle terrain, has historically been a stronghold for dissident factions of the FARC. Despite the Army's assertion that no direct combat has occurred in the specific area where contact was lost, the presence of groups like the Estado Mayor Central (EMC), led by Iván Mordisco, remains a constant threat. This context is particularly sensitive, as a similar incident occurred last August when the EMC abducted 34 soldiers in the same region, although they were released after three days.

The Defensoría del Pueblo has repeatedly warned about the escalating risk of armed confrontations in Guaviare, highlighting the expansion of FARC dissidents and their impact on civilian populations through threats, forced displacement, and confinement. The current situation, where a military unit is effectively cut off, underscores the persistent challenges faced by security forces in maintaining control and ensuring the safety of their personnel in these complex operational environments.
