Colombian Juan Valencia Scores Late Winner as Necaxa Beats Monterrey 2-1

Colombian forward Juan Valencia emerged as the hero for Necaxa, scoring a dramatic late winner to secure a 2-1 victory over Monterrey in the Mexican league's Apertura tournament. The match, held on Sunday, saw Necaxa capitalize on a red card to Monterrey's Stefan Medina in the 19th minute.

Despite the man advantage, Necaxa struggled to break down Monterrey's defense for much of the game. They finally took the lead in the 54th minute when Julián Carranza, an Argentine player, headed home a corner kick delivered by his compatriot Lorenzo Faravelli. The lead was short-lived, however, as Monterrey equalized through a penalty converted by Lucas Ocampos, another Argentine, after a handball in the box.

As the match seemed destined for a draw, Valencia, who had just come on as a substitute, found himself on the end of a cross from the right in the 90th minute. He struck the ball into the net, sealing a crucial three points for Necaxa. The victory places Necaxa in a strong position early in the season, while Monterrey, managed by Argentine Matías Almeyda, will need to regroup.
