Colombian President attends closing Flower Fair parade in Medellín

Colombian President Abelardo de la Espriella and Vice President José Manuel Restrepo marked their early days in office by participating in the closing Silleteros Parade of Medellín's renowned Flower Fair. The event, held on Sunday, August 9, 2026, in the capital of Antioquia, signifies a vibrant cultural tradition that draws thousands of tourists annually.

President De la Espriella, sporting a Panama hat adorned with the Colombian flag, attended with First Lady Ana Lucía Pineda. Vice President Restrepo was accompanied by his wife, Tatiana Céspedes. They were hosted by Medellín Mayor Federico Gutiérrez, who described the parade as the city's most important event. The "silleteros," local farmers, carry on their backs "silletas" – wooden frames adorned with intricate flower mosaics depicting national life and figures.

"Behind every silleta there is a family, a story, hands that have spent months cultivating flowers and entire generations caring for a legacy that represents us to the world," Mayor Gutiérrez posted on X. The president, smiling and interacting with the public, took photos and shook hands with attendees near the mayor's box, showcasing a warm engagement in one of his first public appearances as the nation's leader.

Medellín transforms into a "living garden" for the fair, with the silleteros' creations evolving from ancient wooden frames used for carrying loads to artistic representations of daily life. This custom, central to the Flower Fair since 1957, celebrated its 69th edition this year, running from July 31 to August 9.
