Colombo Port ranks among world's top 20 container ports

Colombo Port has achieved a significant milestone, ranking 20th among the world's leading container ports in the first half of 2023. This upward movement, from 26th place last year, is attributed to an impressive 11.9% surge in container operations, according to the latest data from maritime analyst Alphaliner.

Between January and June of this year, Colombo Port processed 4,444,034 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs). This represents a substantial increase of 471,981 TEUs compared to the 3,972,053 TEUs handled during the corresponding period in 2022. The port had already set a record in the previous year, handling close to 8.3 million TEUs, and has sustained this growth momentum.

The Sri Lanka Ports Authority highlighted that a significant portion of Colombo Port's container operations involves transshipment. This growth further solidifies the port's role as a key transshipment hub in the Indian Ocean. Looking ahead, the authority is actively seeking potential investments totaling up to $2 billion over the next one to three years.

These anticipated investments are earmarked for port expansion projects and public-private partnerships. The funds will be directed towards enhancing capacity, productivity, and operational efficiency within the container handling and supply chain infrastructure, ensuring Colombo Port remains competitive on the global stage.
