Sri Lanka highways earn over $8 million in two days during holiday rush

Sri Lanka's extensive expressway network saw a significant surge in traffic and revenue during a recent long holiday weekend, generating approximately 124.5 million rupees (about $8.4 million) in just two days. The Ministry of Transport and Highways reported that the surge in travel, as many citizens visited hometowns or went on leisure trips, led to a substantial increase in toll collections.

During the two-day period, a total of 325,310 vehicles traversed the nation's expressways. August 26 saw 163,763 vehicles, contributing over 64 million rupees in revenue. The following day, August 27, recorded 161,553 vehicles, bringing in a nearly identical 64.1 million rupees. This high volume of traffic underscores the importance of the expressway system for domestic travel and economic activity during holiday periods.

The Southern Expressway proved to be the busiest and most lucrative, collecting 67.7 million rupees on its own. The Colombo-Katunayake Expressway also performed strongly, earning 34.8 million rupees over the same two days. Additionally, the Central Expressway contributed 12.9 million rupees to the total revenue, highlighting the widespread use of the country's highway infrastructure.

This financial performance reflects a successful holiday travel period for the expressway authority. The increased revenue generated during these peak travel times is vital for the maintenance and further development of Sri Lanka's transportation network, supporting connectivity and economic mobility across the island.
