Colón: Heavy rains damage homes and force families to evacuate

At least 20 homes were affected by heavy rain in Colón province, with a landslide and a collapsed wall damaging residences in Villas del Caribe and floodwater entering homes in two other communities.

The incidents were concentrated in the districts of Cristóbal and Cristóbal Este. In Villas del Caribe, three homes suffered partial damage, while sediment blocked access to a fourth residence. Families left the area as a preventive measure and moved to relatives’ or neighbors’ homes.

During the early morning, a landslide occurred in the Villas del Caribe area, partially affecting three homes and affecting another home because sediment entered the residence.

The National Civil Protection System, known as Sinaproc, and the Ministry of Housing and Territorial Planning advised residents to leave temporarily while workers address the unstable ground. No temporary shelters had been established.

A creek in the Cuatro Altos area overflowed and sent water into homes in Nazareno A and Sagrada Resurrección. Sinaproc estimated that about four houses were affected in Nazareno and another 10 in Sagrada Resurrección, with damage to rooms, furniture, appliances and clothing.

Authorities continued monitoring Colón’s Costa Arriba, central areas and Costa Abajo because of the possibility of more rain. “We have no victims to mourn or report, thank God, in Colón province as a result of the heavy rain,” the regional director said. Sinaproc urged people living near rivers, creeks or landslide-prone areas to remain alert and contact emergency teams when necessary.
