Colorado Mayor Spends Nights at Homeless Shelter, Faces Criticism

Aurora, Colorado Mayor Mike Coffman is spending his Friday nights at the Aurora Regional Navigation Center, a local homeless shelter, to gain firsthand experience of its services. The 71-year-old mayor sleeps on a cot provided by the shelter and volunteers to serve breakfast the following morning before returning to his mayoral duties.

Coffman stated his intention to continue this routine weekly until he is confident that the shelter's system effectively meets the challenges faced by individuals in its initial tier of services. The center operates on a tiered system, with higher tiers offering more comprehensive support contingent on greater resident engagement and commitment, including securing full-time employment for Tier Three.

His commitment to understanding the issue firsthand is not new. In 2021, Coffman participated in a news segment where he lived as 'HomelessMike' for seven days, staying in shelters and encampments. During that experience, he controversially described homelessness as a "lifestyle choice," a statement he later clarified, explaining he meant individuals choose between shelters or outdoor living.

A recent photo from the shelter showed Coffman sleeping with industrial ear muffs, which drew criticism on social media. Some users interpreted this as evidence that he was not sharing the same experience as other residents. Coffman acknowledged the criticism, admitting the shelter environment was initially loud with barking dogs and dozens of men, but stated he gradually adapted to the noise.
